Description

Albino Red Eye Angelfish

The Albino Red Eye Angelfish is a captivating freshwater fish prized for its elegance and striking colouration. These angelfish are a selectively bred variation of the common angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) and are known for their peaceful temperament, making them a popular choice for community aquariums.

Scientific Name: Pterophyllum sp. (Due to selective breeding, an exact species designation isn’t possible)

Water Quality: Albino Red Eye Angelfish prefer pristine water conditions. Regular water changes (25-50% weekly) are crucial to maintain good water quality.

  • pH Level: 6.0 – 7.5 (slightly acidic to slightly alkaline)
  • GH Level: 8 – 12 dGH (moderately hard water)
  • KH Level: 4 – 8 dKH (moderately soft to moderately hard water)

Feeding: Angelfish are omnivores. Offer a varied diet of high-quality flake food, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms, and occasional vegetables like blanched spinach or zucchini.

Tank Mates: These angelfish are generally peaceful but can be aggressive towards smaller tank mates. Ideal tank mates include gouramis, tetras, barbs (larger species), and catfish. Avoid housing them with fin nippers or very small fish.

Substrates and Tank Decorations: Use a soft sand or gravel substrate to avoid damaging their delicate fins. Provide plenty of hiding places with driftwood, rocks, and tall plants.

Suitable Plants: Angelfish may nibble on some plants. Choose hardier plants like Amazon swordtails, Java ferns, Anubias, or Vallisneria.

Sexing and Breeding: Sexing Albino Red Eye Angelfish can be difficult when they are young. Mature males tend to have a more prominent nuchal hump (head bump) and longer fins. Breeding requires a separate breeding tank with specific water conditions and spawning sites.

Maximum Size and Longevity: Albino Red Eye Angelfish can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in height and live for 10-12 years with proper care.

Behavior: These angelfish are generally peaceful community fish. However, they can become territorial during breeding and may harass tank mates.

Things to Consider Before Buying:

  • Tank Size: Provide a minimum tank size of 55 gallons (208 litres) for a single angelfish or a group of 4-6.
  • Filtration: Angelfish produce a moderate bioload. Choose a strong filter suitable for the tank size.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. Avoid very bright lighting.

General Information: Albino Red Eye Angelfish are relatively easy to care for once established but require good water quality and a spacious tank.

Fun Fact: Angelfish are known for their intelligence and ability to recognize their owners!
