Introduction: Ambulia, also known as Limnophila sessiliflora, is a popular aquarium plant known for its graceful, feathery leaves and fast growth. Its lush appearance and ease of care make it a favorite for both novice and experienced aquarists, adding a vibrant, natural look to any aquatic setup.
Origin: Ambulia is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows in a variety of aquatic environments including slow-moving rivers, streams, and marshes. It thrives in both fully submerged and partially emerged conditions.
Scientific Name: The scientific name of Ambulia is Limnophila sessiliflora.
Lighting Requirements: Ambulia thrives under moderate to high lighting conditions. Providing 8 to 12 hours of light each day will support its rapid growth and help maintain its vibrant green color. In lower light conditions, it may grow more slowly and become leggy.
Care Level: With a care level of 3 on a scale of 1 to 10, Ambulia is relatively easy to care for. It is well-suited for beginners and experienced aquarists alike due to its adaptability and low maintenance needs.
Preferred Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C)
- pH Level: 6.0 to 7.5
- GH Level (General Hardness): 3 to 10 dGH
- KH Level (Carbonate Hardness): 2 to 6 dKH
Placement: Ambulia is best placed in the midground or background of your aquarium. Its tall, bushy growth can provide a beautiful backdrop or fill in open spaces, creating a lush and natural look. It grows quickly and can reach the surface if not trimmed regularly.
Growth Rate: Ambulia has a fast growth rate. It rapidly develops into a dense, bushy plant, so regular trimming is needed to maintain its shape and prevent it from overshadowing other plants. Its fast growth also makes it effective at helping to control algae by outcompeting it for nutrients.
CO2 and Fertiliser: Supplemental CO2 can enhance the growth of Ambulia, although it is not strictly necessary. Regular fertilization with liquid or substrate fertilizers, particularly those containing micronutrients and iron, will support its vigorous growth and vibrant appearance.
Potential Problems: Ambulia is generally hardy but may face issues such as algae growth or poor coloration if not provided with adequate light and nutrients. Ensure stable water parameters and regular maintenance to keep it healthy and thriving.
Compatible Fishes: Ambulia pairs well with a variety of peaceful fish species. Suitable tankmates include:
- Tetras
- Rasboras
- Guppies
- Corydoras Catfish
- Shrimp (e.g., Cherry Shrimp, Amano Shrimp)
Other Suitable Plants: To create a balanced and visually appealing aquascape, consider pairing Ambulia with these complementary plants:
- Java Fern
- Anubias species
- Cryptocoryne species
- Ludwigia species
- Vallisneria
Tropical or Cold Water? Ambulia thrives in tropical water conditions, with a stable temperature range between 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C) being ideal for its growth.
What Fish Can Eat It? Most fish do not typically consume Ambulia. However, larger or more aggressive fish might occasionally nibble on its leaves. In a well-maintained community tank, it generally remains safe from being eaten.
A Fun Fact: Ambulia is valued in aquascaping for its ability to quickly create a lush, dense background in an aquarium. Its feathery leaves and rapid growth make it a popular choice for creating a natural, vibrant underwater environment, often used to mimic the look of dense aquatic vegetation found in its native habitats.
