Introduction
Echinodorus Tenellus Broad, also known as Broad Leaf Chain Sword, is a fast-growing foreground carpeting plant that creates a lush, green underwater lawn in aquariums. Compared to the standard Echinodorus Tenellus, this variant has broader leaves, giving it a more robust and vibrant appearance. The tissue culture format ensures that the plant is free from pests, algae, and diseases, making it a perfect start for healthy, contamination-free growth in your aquarium.
Origin
Native to North and South America, Echinodorus Tenellus naturally grows in shallow waters, forming dense carpet-like growth in marshy environments.
Scientific Name
Echinodorus tenellus ‘Broad’
Lighting Requirements
- Moderate to high lighting (8-12 hours daily) is required for compact, carpet-like growth.
- Under low light, the plant may grow taller and leggy instead of spreading.
Care Level
Easy to Moderate – It grows well in various conditions, but for best results, stable lighting and nutrients are needed.
Preferred Water Parameters
- Temperature: 20-28°C (68-82°F)
- pH: 5.5-7.5
- Hardness: 2-10 dGH
Prefers soft to moderately hard water, with stable conditions for optimal growth.
Placement
- Foreground – Perfect for carpeting the front of the tank.
- Can also be placed in the midground in nano tanks for a balanced look.
Growth Rate
Fast – Spreads quickly via runners, forming a thick carpet over time. Regular trimming helps maintain a neat, compact look.
CO2 and Fertilizer
- CO₂ supplementation is recommended for faster, more compact growth.
- Benefits from liquid fertilizers rich in iron and micronutrients.
- A nutrient-rich substrate enhances its color and growth rate.
Potential Problems
- Melting – May occur when transitioning to a new tank but will recover with time.
- Slow growth without CO₂ – The plant can survive without CO₂ but will spread slower and grow taller.
- Algae growth – Can occur if lighting is too high without proper fertilization.
Compatible Fishes
- Tetras, Rasboras, and Guppies – Appreciate the natural cover it provides.
- Dwarf Cichlids and Shrimp – Enjoy the lush carpeting.
- Corydoras Catfish – Love foraging among the short grass-like leaves.
Other Suitable Plants
- Monte Carlo – Another great carpeting plant for variation in texture.
- Dwarf Hairgrass – Complements Echinodorus Tenellus for a more diverse foreground.
- Cryptocoryne – Adds contrast with its broader, darker leaves.
Tropical or Cold Water?
Tropical – Prefers warmer temperatures but can tolerate slightly cooler conditions.
What Fish Can Eat It?
- Goldfish and larger herbivorous fish may nibble on it.
- Most community fish do not eat Echinodorus Tenellus.
A Fun Fact
When exposed to high light and CO₂, Echinodorus Tenellus Broad can develop a reddish tint on its leaves, adding a unique color gradient to planted tanks!
