Description

Red Fuji Discus

Roxy Aquarium's Discus Collection

A vibrant freshwater fish with a striking red hue, featuring distinctive circular patterns on its body, popular in aquariums.

Introduction

Scientific Name: Symphysodon aequifasciatus “Fuji Red”

Welcome to the captivating world of the Fuji Red Discus fish! With its vibrant colors and graceful appearance, this mesmerizing species is a favorite among aquarists. Get ready to discover the beauty and charm of this remarkable aquatic companion.

Water Quality

Temperature: 26°C – 31°C (78.8°F – 87.8°F)

pH Level: Keep the water slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.

GH Level: Ensure water hardness falls within 3 to 10 degrees of General Hardness (dGH) to support their well-being.

KH Level: Maintain a Carbonate Hardness (KH) between 1 to 5 degrees to stabilize pH and promote a healthy environment.

Feeding & Tank Mates

Fuji Red Discus thrive on a diverse diet comprising flakes, pellets, and live/frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.

They are generally peaceful but somewhat shy, making compatible tankmates such as cardinal tetras, rummy-nose tetras, corydoras catfish, and angelfish a wise choice, while avoiding aggressive or fin-nipping species is recommended.

Substrates & Decoration

Provide a soft, sandy substrate to mimic their natural environment. Decorate the tank with driftwood, rocks, and smooth surfaces for them to explore and hide. Adding tall plants around the edges can provide security.

Breeding & Sexing

Sexing discus can be challenging. Males are typically larger with more pointed dorsal and anal fins. During breeding, females may have a more rounded appearance due to the presence of eggs.
Breeding discus requires specific conditions and patience. Provide a separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water. The pair will clean a flat surface, usually a vertical surface like the tank glass, to lay their eggs. Both parents care for the fry.

Maximum Size and Longevity

Fuji Red Discus can grow up to 6 – 8 inches (15 – 20 cm) in size. With proper care, they can live anywhere from 8 to 15 years, or even longer in some cases.

General Information

Fuji Red Discus are a selectively bred variant of the common Discus fish. Their striking red coloration and serene nature make them highly sought after by enthusiasts.

A Fun Fact

In their natural habitat, Discus fish are known to exhibit unique parenting behavior. They secrete a nutritious slime on their body to feed their fry during their early stages of development, ensuring the best start for their offspring.
