Ceratophyllum demersum is one of the easiest freshwater plants to grow, also known as Hornwort is a species of Ceratophyllum which belongs to Ceratophyyaceae family. It is also commonly known as rigid hornwort, coontail or coon’s tail. It is free floating, submersed aquatic plant with a cosmopolitan distribution, native to all continents except Antarctica, after originating from North America. Leaves are produced in whorls of 6-12. It is dark green plants though warmer environments can cause lighter green shades. It has allelopathic abilities i.e. it can produce chemicals which prevent the growth of other species, leaving more space and nutrients for itself. It can be used as a floating plant or rooted in the substrate in the aquarium tank. It can reach maximum size of 10 feet long and 1/10 inch in diameter. It belongs to Genus Ceratophyllum.
