Description

Introduction: The Licorice Gourami is a small, delicate, and beautifully colored freshwater fish that is a true gem for aquarists who appreciate subtle beauty and peaceful species. Known for its iridescent sheen and intricate patterns, the Licorice Gourami is a peaceful fish that thrives in well-maintained, soft-water aquariums with plenty of hiding spots.

Scientific Name: The Licorice Gourami is scientifically known as Parosphromenus deissneri. It belongs to the family Osphronemidae.

Water Quality and Temperature: To replicate the natural environment of the Licorice Gourami, it’s crucial to maintain pristine water conditions:

  • Temperature: Maintain a temperature range between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
  • pH Level: The ideal pH for Licorice Gouramis is slightly acidic, between 4.0 and 6.5.
  • GH Level: Keep the general hardness (GH) low, ideally between 1 to 5 dGH.
  • Water Flow: They prefer calm waters, so ensure minimal water movement in the tank.

Feeding: Licorice Gouramis are carnivorous and require a diet that mimics their natural food sources:

  • Live Foods: Offer live foods like micro-worms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
  • Frozen Foods: Frozen bloodworms and other small, protein-rich foods are also suitable.
  • Feeding Behavior: They prefer small, frequent feedings and may take time to adapt to non-live food.

Tank Mates: Due to their small size and shy nature, Licorice Gouramis should be housed with similarly peaceful species. Consider other small, non-aggressive fish like small rasboras, tetras, or shrimp. Ideally, they do best in a species-specific setup. Avoid larger or more boisterous species, which can outcompete them for food or cause stress.

Substrates and Tank Decorations: Use dark, soft substrates like fine sand or smooth gravel to mimic their natural habitat. Include plenty of live plants, driftwood, and leaf litter to provide hiding spots and create a dimly lit environment. Moderate to low lighting is preferred, as these fish inhabit shaded, slow-moving waters in the wild.

Suitable Plants: Licorice Gouramis appreciate densely planted aquariums, consider hardy plants like Java Fern, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne species. Floating plants like Salvinia or Frogbit can also help diffuse light and create a more comfortable environment.

Sexing: Sexing Licorice Gouramis can be challenging but possible with careful observation, males typically display more intense colors and have longer, more pointed fins whereas, females tend to be smaller, less colorful, and have rounder bellies, especially when gravid.

Breeding: Breeding Licorice Gouramis requires careful preparation, provide plenty of hiding spots and soft, acidic water conditions. The males will build bubble nests where the eggs will be laid. After spawning, the male guards the nest, and the fry hatch in about 24 to 36 hours. Once the fry become free-swimming, they can be fed infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Maximum Size and Longevity: Licorice Gouramis are small, growing up to about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in length. With proper care, they can live up to 4 to 5 years in captivity.

General Information: Licorice Gouramis are a delicate species best suited for experienced aquarists due to their specific care requirements. Their stunning coloration and peaceful demeanor make them a rewarding species for those willing to provide the necessary care.

A Fun Fact: The Licorice Gourami’s name comes from the male’s striking, almost metallic, dark stripes and vibrant iridescent colors, which are reminiscent of the candy “licorice.”
