Description

Introduction: The Red Apricot Paradise Fish, a vibrant variation of the traditional Paradise Fish, is well-loved for its striking colors and hardy nature. Originating from the slow-moving waters of Southeast Asia, particularly in regions like China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, this labyrinth fish is both beautiful and resilient. Its bright red and apricot hues make it a standout in any aquarium, and its adaptability to different environments makes it suitable for beginner and experienced aquarists alike.

Scientific Name: The Red Apricot Paradise Fish belongs to the species Macropodus opercularis, commonly known as the Paradise Fish. This variety is referred to as the Red Apricot Paradise Fish due to its unique coloration.

Water Quality and Temperature:

  • Temperature: Maintain water temperatures between 68°F to 82°F (20°C to 28°C). This fish is quite tolerant of varying temperatures, making it suitable for unheated tanks in warmer climates.
  • pH Level: Keep the pH between 6.0 and 8.0. It can thrive in both slightly acidic and alkaline water, though neutral water is ideal.
  • Water Hardness: Preferably, maintain water hardness between 5 to 25 dGH, but they are adaptable to both soft and hard water conditions.

Feeding: The Red Apricot Paradise Fish is an omnivore and will accept a wide range of food types. A varied diet helps maintain its health and vibrant coloration.

  • Flakes and Pellets: High-quality tropical fish flakes or pellets form a good staple diet.
  • Live/Frozen Foods: Supplement with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to enhance coloration and provide necessary protein.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasionally offer blanched spinach, zucchini, or algae-based foods to meet their plant-based nutritional needs.

Tank Mates: While the Red Apricot Paradise Fish can coexist with other species, it can sometimes exhibit aggressive or territorial behavior, especially toward slow-moving or long-finned tank mates. Suitable companions include fast-moving fish like danios, barbs, or rasboras. It’s best to avoid keeping them with other labyrinth fish like bettas or gouramis to prevent territorial disputes. Keeping them in pairs or small groups is possible, but monitor them closely to avoid aggression.

Substrates and Tank Decorations: Use a soft, sandy substrate or fine gravel to mimic their natural environment. Include plenty of plants, both rooted and floating, as well as rock caves and driftwood for hiding spots. Dense vegetation and areas of shade help replicate their natural habitat and make them feel secure. Since these fish are surface dwellers, provide open spaces for them to swim freely.

Suitable Plants: Hardy plants such as Java Ferns, Anubias, or Vallisneria are excellent choices for tanks housing Paradise Fish. Floating plants like Water Lettuce or Amazon Frogbit can provide cover at the surface, which is where these fish spend much of their time.

Sexing: Males are more vibrant in color, have longer, more elaborate fins, and tend to be slightly larger than females. Females are generally duller and have shorter fins, especially noticeable during breeding, when males exhibit heightened coloration.

Breeding: Breeding the Red Apricot Paradise Fish is relatively easy, as they are bubble nest builders. Males will create bubble nests at the water’s surface, where they will attempt to attract a female. After spawning, the male will guard the eggs in the nest until they hatch. It’s best to remove the female after spawning to avoid aggression. A separate breeding tank is ideal, as the male will protect the nest aggressively.

Maximum Size and Longevity: Red Apricot Paradise Fish can grow up to 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length. With proper care, they can live for 5 to 8 years in captivity, making them a long-term addition to an aquarium.

General Information: Known for their striking colors and hardy nature, the Red Apricot Paradise Fish is an excellent choice for those looking to add a vibrant and engaging fish to their tank. Their ability to thrive in a variety of water conditions, coupled with their fascinating bubble-nest-building behavior, makes them a unique species to observe. Though they can be territorial, providing them with plenty of space and hiding spots can help mitigate aggression.

A Fun Fact: The Paradise Fish is one of the earliest aquarium fish to be kept in Europe, having been introduced in the mid-19th century. Its hardy nature and stunning appearance quickly made it a favorite among early aquarists.
