Introduction: The Redfin Anthias (Pseudanthias dispar), also known as the Dispar Anthias or Peach Anthias, is a popular species in the marine aquarium hobby, prized for its stunning coloration and active, schooling behavior. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this vibrant fish adds a splash of orange, pink, and red to any saltwater setup. With its striking red fins and peaceful temperament, the Redfin Anthias is a great choice for reef tanks and community aquariums that provide plenty of swimming space.
Scientific Name: The Redfin Anthias is scientifically known as Pseudanthias dispar. It belongs to the Serranidae family, commonly known as sea basses and groupers.
Water Quality and Temperature: To ensure the health and vibrant coloration of the Redfin Anthias, maintain the following water parameters:
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 26°C).
- pH Level: Keep the pH level between 8.1 and 8.4 to mimic natural reef conditions.
- Salinity: Specific gravity should be maintained between 1.020 and 1.025.
- KH Level: Aim for a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8 to 12 dKH.
Feeding: Redfin Anthias are planktivores in the wild and have a high metabolism, so they require frequent feedings. Provide a varied diet of:
- Frozen Foods: Offer mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
- Pellets/Flakes: High-quality marine pellets and flakes are suitable, especially those formulated for anthias.
- Live Foods: Occasional live foods such as copepods or enriched brine shrimp are appreciated.
- Frequency: Feed small amounts 2 to 3 times daily to meet their high energy demands.
Tank Mates: Redfin Anthias are peaceful and social fish that do well in groups. Keep them in schools of at least 3 to 5 individuals to replicate their natural behavior. They can be housed with other peaceful marine species such as clownfish, wrasses, gobies, and tangs. Avoid aggressive or overly large species that may intimidate them.
Substrates and Tank Decorations: A Redfin Anthias tank should have a sandy substrate and plenty of open swimming space, as these fish are active swimmers. Incorporate live rock formations with caves and crevices to provide hiding spots where they can retreat if they feel threatened. Strong water movement and areas of moderate flow are essential to replicate their natural reef environment.
Suitable Plants: Although Redfin Anthias do not interact with plants, live rock and coral structures provide them with natural cover and territory. In a reef setup, soft corals, LPS (large polyp stony corals), and SPS (small polyp stony corals) make excellent companions, enhancing the aesthetics of the aquarium while keeping the environment natural and vibrant.
Sexing: Sexual dimorphism is present in Redfin Anthias. Males are usually larger with more vibrant colors and extended dorsal fins. Females are smaller and have a more subdued coloration, often lacking the vivid red on their fins. In captivity, dominant females may transform into males if no males are present in the group.
Breeding: Breeding Redfin Anthias in captivity is challenging due to their complex social hierarchy and spawning behavior. In the wild, they are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning females can change into males. They form harems with one dominant male and several females. Spawning usually occurs in the evening, and the eggs are released into the water column. Successful breeding in aquariums is rare, and raising the fry is difficult due to their small size and specific feeding needs.
Maximum Size and Longevity: Redfin Anthias can grow up to 4 inches (10 cm) in length. With proper care, they can live for 5 to 7 years in captivity.
General Information: The Redfin Anthias is a beautiful and active addition to any marine or reef aquarium. Their peaceful nature, schooling behavior, and stunning colors make them a favorite among marine aquarists. A well-maintained, clean environment with a stable food supply is crucial for their long-term health and happiness.
A Fun Fact: Redfin Anthias live in harems in the wild, with one dominant male leading a group of females. If the male dies or is removed, the most dominant female will change sex to become the new male—a fascinating example of protogynous hermaphroditism in the marine world.
