Introduction: The Coral Banded Shrimp, also known as the Banded Cleaner Shrimp, is a striking marine invertebrate recognized for its red and white banded body, long antennae, and its beneficial cleaning habits. Native to reefs across the Indo-Pacific, this shrimp is popular among marine aquarists for its vibrant appearance and natural role in assisting with tank maintenance by cleaning parasites off fish.

Scientific Name: Stenopus hispidus, commonly known as the Coral Banded Shrimp or Banded Cleaner Shrimp.

Water Quality and Temperature:

  • Temperature: Ideal water temperatures range from 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 26°C), which mirrors their tropical reef habitat.
  • pH Level: A stable pH of 8.1 to 8.4 is optimal.
  • Salinity: Maintain a specific gravity between 1.023 and 1.025.
  • KH Level: Keep carbonate hardness (KH) around 8 to 12 dKH to ensure stable water conditions.

Feeding:

  • Diet: Coral Banded Shrimp are omnivorous scavengers and will eat detritus, algae, and uneaten food particles in the tank. They also enjoy meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
  • Supplemental Feeding: Feed them small portions of frozen or live foods every few days to ensure they get enough nutrition, especially in tanks with limited natural detritus.
  • Feeding Frequency: Offer supplemental feedings every 2–3 days for optimal health.

Tank Mates: While generally peaceful, Coral Banded Shrimp can be territorial, particularly with other shrimp or crustaceans of similar size. They do well with peaceful, reef-safe fish and other non-aggressive tank mates but may become aggressive towards smaller or similarly sized shrimp. They are best kept singly or as a mated pair in a medium to large tank to reduce territorial disputes.

Substrates and Tank Decorations: A sandy substrate with plenty of live rock or coral structures is ideal, as it allows them to establish a territory and find hiding spots. They are nocturnal by nature, so providing plenty of caves and crevices in the rockwork helps them feel secure during the day.

Suitable Plants: Coral Banded Shrimp are not plant-interactive but will appreciate a tank setup with algae or coral-encrusted rocks, which offer a natural environment and encourage foraging.

Sexing: Males are typically smaller than females, with females having a slightly bulkier body. However, size differences may be subtle and not easily discerned.

Breeding: Breeding Coral Banded Shrimp in captivity is challenging and rarely achieved. They are known to carry eggs, which are fertilized and held under the female’s abdomen. However, larval shrimp require specific planktonic foods and specialized conditions to survive, which are difficult to replicate in most aquariums.

Maximum Size and Longevity: Coral Banded Shrimp can grow up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length, with a lifespan of up to 2 to 3 years under ideal conditions.

General Information: Coral Banded Shrimp are prized for their bold coloration and active cleaning behavior. Their peaceful, beneficial presence makes them suitable for a reef tank setup with fish, coral, and other invertebrates. They contribute to tank cleanliness by feeding on detritus and cleaning off fish when the fish present themselves for this service. However, their territorial nature means careful selection of tank mates is advised.

A Fun Fact: The Coral Banded Shrimp is known for its “cleaning station” behavior, where fish often come to be cleaned of parasites. This fascinating mutualistic relationship helps fish stay healthy while providing the shrimp with a reliable food source.
