The Black Belt Cichlid (Vieja maculicauda), also known as the Black Belt Flag Cichlid, is a vibrant freshwater fish native to Central America. While some cichlids are known for their aggression, the Black Belt Cichlid is a good choice for aquarists seeking a Central American cichlid with a calmer temperament.
Scientific Name: Vieja maculicauda
Water Quality: Prefers moderate water conditions, but is adaptable as long as extremes are avoided.
pH Level: Neutral (around 7.0) is ideal.
GH Level: 8-12 dGH
KH Level: 8-12 dKH
Feeding: Provide a varied diet of high-quality flake food, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms, and chopped vegetables.
Tank Mates: Best housed with other Central American cichlids of similar size and temperament. Avoid small, peaceful fish that will be seen as prey.
Sexing: Females tend to be darker overall than males. Males will also develop a more pronounced nuchal hump (a raised area on the forehead).
Breeding: Relatively easy to breed in captivity. They are egg layers and will fiercely protect their fry.
Maximum Size and Longevity: Reaches up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length and can live for 7-8 years with proper care.
General Information: Black Belt Cichlids are intelligent fish and can recognize their owners. They appreciate caves and hiding places in the aquarium.
Fun Fact: The Black Belt Cichlid gets its name from the bold black stripe running along its body, resembling a black belt in martial arts.
